That has been the biggest question I have gotten since we suddenly closed our doors. I own another successful business along with a few side businesses. I had always wanted to own some sort of retail store. Mostly a pawn shop or a bowling alley. But I loved phones and decided to learn to work on them. I opened next door in suite 112 with just a small counter and a few chairs at the end of 2013. I was so busy that I was often at work 2 hours after close. Two years later I moved to suite 114 in a much bigger space. It gave my customers more waiting room and me a bigger space in the back.
But like anything else rent was higher now, prices for cell phone parts were going up and the cost to repair them was going down. Not only that but now you could go to your carrier and trade in your phone or they can sometimes do the repair there. In 2018 I took a hands off approach to the store. I hired someone to run the store. I was traveling the country in 2018 and I loved the places that I got to go with my wife and 4 year old daughter. The person I hired to run the store decided to pursue his passion of becoming a police officer. I tried to hire a someone to run the store for 2019. I only got 1 applicant with experience. But unfortunately this person was not reliable and highly immature. On there 3rd day they were watching tv up front. I fired them the same week.
If I wanted to continue to travel I had to find someone to run the store. I spent a Friday afternoon while it was quiet at the store and ran all the numbers from the day we opened till that moment. We had been loosing money over the last 2 years. Most of the money we lost was because we hired someone to work in the store as a tech.
The next day I came into work and sat in my chair an hour before we were going to open. I thought to myself what am I going to do. I have no applicants and ads everywhere. If I wanted to travel like I did in 2018 and run my other businesses from the road I was going to have to make a change. At 10:00 am that morning instead of turning on the open sign and switching the lights on, I instead put a sign on the door that we were closed. I called some friends over and we moved everything out of the store in 2 days.
I was sad to see the store go but at the same time I had done something I had always wanted to do and that was to own a retail store. It might not have been the greatest retail store ever as we mostly did repairs but we did sell a lot of cell phone accessories and other random things. It was good times. But times have changed and I want to travel.
I loved all my customers. I want to thank all of you for coming to us and getting your phone repaired. I wish you the best for 2019.
